Did you know that your teeth have a plumbing all their own? Would you like to know more about how it works?
Plumbing may not be the most optimal way to describe this tooth truth, but plumbing is something with which most of us have at least some familiarity.
The fluid is supposed to flow one way. Of course, I am referring to your teeth. The flow is supposed to be from the inside of your tooth to the outside [Whole-Body Dentistry, Page 40].
What am I talking about you ask? Don't you know that your teeth have little caves in them? They're called tubules. These tubules interconnect with other tubules. There are millions of these little dandies running through each tooth in your mouth.
If you eat the right stuff, that is if you eat a good diet, chances are good that the flow through those tubes is in the optimal direction. From inside the tooth to outside the tooth. This serves to keep the tooth nourished and, well, clean.
However, if you eat a diet high in refined sugars, the flow goes the other direction. That is, from the mouth into the tooth.
How do they know this or how did they discover this phenomenon? A study was done using rats whereby a fluorescent dye was injected into the gut of rats and within 10 minutes the dye was found in the dentinal tubules. [Ralph R. Steinman, Pharmacologic Control of Dentinal Fluid Movement and Dental Caries in Rats]
Wow, what should we do? Eat healthy to avoid getting those nasty little microorganisms inside your teeth. This should go a long way toward avoiding dental caries.
So do yourself a favor and keep your tooth's plumbing flowing in the right direction. You will save yourself a lot of headaches or should I say toothaches?
